On Saturday, July 30th, 2010 IRC4Fun Server Administrators (IRC4Fun Administration) voted to change Server IRCd Software.  The vote was to either keep running Unreal3.2* or change to Nefarious IRCu.

Per the vote, the change would require client and hub servers be changed over in a well organized process to prevent inconvenience to our users. The change (upgrades) were completed without any hitches!

Notes about how the Change affects IRC4Fun users:

  • Channel Modes have Changed.
  • User Modes have Changed.
  • WHOIS Information will no longer reveal the Server’s name that a user is using (except to IRC4Fun Staff)
  • /LINKS & /MAP are disabled – visit our Servers list for a listing of active IRC4Fun Servers
  • Users may only /JOIN up to 10 channels maximum (This was never a problem to most of us)
  • vHosts are not automatic to non-Registered users (Registered Users must IDENTIFY to N before their assigned vHosts will be activated)

If you have any questions about the Server Upgrades, please connect to IRC4Fun, /join #Help

Effective August 4th, 2009

All IRC4Fun client servername’s have changed to the proper geographical location of the server. (Don’t worry: The old server-names will continue to be routed to the proper servers)
Below is a list of the changes:

  • sunnydale.IRC4Fun.net has become Dallas.TX.US.IRC4Fun.net (updated 10/03/2009) [formerly: Chicago.IL.US.IRC4Fun.net Aug 4 2009 - Oct 3 2009]
  • vortex.IRC4Fun.net has become NewYork.NY.US.IRC4Fun.net
  • New United States Round Robin: us.IRC4Fun.net
  • General Round Robin: irc.IRC4Fun.net

* Again; all old server-names will continue to route users to the proper new server-names if you haven’t or do not wish to update your server-list. :)

We hope this makes your IRC experience more convenient on IRC4Fun! :)

IRC4Fun has successfully implemented and tested the new Channel Mode (+G) that prevents URL and IRC network spam from ever showing to channel users.

When a channel with Channel Mode +G is spammed; channel users will see a censored-warning message. (See below example)

<SurferDude> Hey Do You Like Girls on WebCams?! See more at <censored-URL-spam>
<MollyPitcher> Go To MoonButtIRC – Type /server -m <censored-IRC-spam>

This new Channel Mode can also be combined with a FREE service developped by IRC4Fun Administrators to help combat Spam, Exploits and other annoyances called Defender. Defender will monitor for spam in channels whether the new channel mode is enabled or not. Defender (when invited or assigned to a channel) can G-line (network-wide ban) the Spammers/Exploiters/Other annoying pests. (See below example)

<SurferDude> Hey Do You Like Girls on WebCams?! See more at <censored-URL-spam>
*** SurferDude has quit IRC (User has been banned from IRC4Fun (Mass Advertising/Mass Messaging will NOT be tolerated on IRC4Fun! [G-line ID: MASS_ADS/SPAM 06/30/2009 @ 12:06 URL E90]))
<MollyPitcher> Go To MoonButtIRC – Type /server -m <censored-IRC-spam>
*** MollyPitcher has quit IRC (User has been banned from IRC4Fun (Mass Advertising/Mass Messaging will NOT be tolerated on IRC4Fun! [G-line ID: MASS_ADS/SPAM 06/30/2009 @ 12:07 IRC E90]))
